TOLIMAN Space Telescope: Searching for Exoplanets around Alpha Centauri

Australia’s TOLIMAN Space Mission

In Australia, astrophysicists are developing TOLIMAN (Telescope for Orbit Locus Interferometric Monitoring of our Astronomical Neighbourhood), an innovative space telescope. Its mission is to discover temperate, potentially habitable exoplanets orbiting our nearest stellar neighbors, the binary star system Alpha Centauri.

The Alpha Centauri System and Potential for Life

Focusing on Alpha Centauri A and B, situated roughly 4.37 light-years from Earth, TOLIMAN seeks rocky worlds within their circumstellar habitable zones where liquid water could persist. Discovering an Earth-like planet around our closest cosmic neighbors would represent one of the most monumental milestones in modern astronomy.

Diffractive Optics and Precision Astrometry

TOLIMAN employs a specialized diffractive pupil mirror that diffracts stellar light into a star-shaped pattern, enabling micro-arcsecond astrometry. By tracking subtle gravitational wobbles induced on the host stars by orbiting planets, astronomers can detect small rocky worlds that would otherwise be overwhelmed by stellar glare.

A Dedicated CubeSat Mission for 2026

Rather than a costly flagship observatory, TOLIMAN is engineered as a compact, agile CubeSat slated for launch in 2026 into a 550-kilometer Low Earth Orbit.

Leadership at the University of Sydney

The mission is directed by Professor Peter Tuthill at the University of Sydney’s Institute for Astronomy. A pioneer in high-precision astronomical instrumentation, Professor Tuthill previously contributed to aperture-masking interferometry on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

AI-Powered Space Edge Computing by Spiral Blue

The project partners with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Australian space startup Spiral Blue. Spiral Blue’s Space Edge-1 (SE1) computer provides onboard artificial intelligence, processing astrometric data in orbit in real time. In April 2023, Spiral Blue made history as the first Australian company to operate an edge computer in space. Founder and CEO Taofiq Huq, an Australian aerospace engineer of Bangladeshi heritage, has garnered multiple global awards for this technological breakthrough.

A Transformative Frontier for Exoplanet Discovery

The TOLIMAN mission promises to revolutionize exoplanetary science. Confirming terrestrial worlds around Alpha Centauri would provide prime targets for future characterization and interstellar exploration missions.
