Team Polaris: Bangladeshi Students Win CERN Contest
Proving once again that frontier scientific research is not the exclusive domain of developed nations, a team of young Bangladeshi college students has triumphed in Beamline for Schools 2026, the prestigious international particle physics competition organized by CERN.
Known as “Team Polaris,” the squad brings together students from Chaumuhani Government Saleh Ahmed College in Noakhali, Birshreshtha Noor Mohammad Public College in Dhaka, and Collectorate School and College in Rangpur. Their experimental proposal was selected among the very finest worldwide.
This year’s CERN competition drew 712 competing teams representing 89 countries, with over 4,500 high school students submitting rigorous scientific proposals. From that vast international field, the CERN jury selected just five winning teams, among them Bangladesh’s Team Polaris.
The proposed research is remarkably advanced: the students designed an experiment to determine whether a thin polysiloxane scintillator sheet can effectively characterize and measure the beam profile of high-energy electron beams. The team will travel to the University of Bonn in Germany to execute their experiment on the ELSA particle accelerator.
This victory is far more than a ceremonial award. It demonstrates that Bangladeshi students are capable of world-class scientific inquiry, generating novel research hypotheses and excelling on global stages. It serves as an immense inspiration for the nation’s rising generation of scientists and engineers.
Warmest congratulations to these brilliant young researchers. Their accomplishment proves that when afforded mentorship and opportunity, students from Bangladesh can compete among the world’s finest. 🇧🇩
