The Infinite Universe and the Multiverse

Cosmic Inflation

One compelling pathway toward an infinite universe multiverse stems from observational cosmology. Physicists deduce that during the initial microsecond of cosmic genesis, the fabric of space underwent an exponential expansion known as cosmic inflation.

In many theoretical models of inflation, this rapid expansion does not halt everywhere at the same instant. While inflation ceased in our sector to condense into a hot Big Bang, it may persist indefinitely in surrounding regions, continually spawning fresh, detached realms. This process, termed eternal inflation, implies that our observable cosmos could be merely one “bubble universe” floating within an endless cosmic foam. Yet it remains a theoretical proposition; no direct observational evidence has yet pierced our cosmic horizon.

The String Landscape and Extra Dimensions

A complementary perspective originates from string theory. According to various formulations of the theory, our three familiar spatial dimensions are not exhaustive. Additional spatial dimensions may exist, curled up so tightly at subatomic scales that they remain completely imperceptible to modern instruments.

This geometry admits an astronomical number of mathematical configurations for fundamental constants and physical laws—a vast solution space known as the “string landscape”. Some physicists hypothesize that different pocket universes could realize entirely different physical vacua, giving rise to alternative laws of physics. However, empirical verification remains out of reach.

An Unsolved Enigma

It is crucial to emphasize that quantum mechanics’ many-worlds interpretation, cosmological eternal inflation, and the string theory landscape are distinct hypotheses. What is mesmerizing, however, is that while following entirely independent mathematical paths, contemporary theoretical physics repeatedly confronts us with the identical profound dilemma: is our universe the only one that exists? Science does not yet possess the answer.

The Neighbor in the Mirror City

Perhaps countless parallel realities flourish beyond our observable horizon. Perhaps none do. Yet if an idea akin to the many-worlds interpretation holds true, then at this very second, an alternate version of you in another universe might be reading these identical sentences, smiling softly at the thought.

Yet you will never meet. It evokes the famous verse by the mystic poet Lalon Fakir: “Near my home lies the Mirror City, where a neighbor dwells, yet not once have I laid eyes upon them.”

Fragile Humans in an Infinite Cosmos

Compared to the grand expanse of the universe, our Earth is an imperceptible speck. Yet on this pale blue dot resides a conscious creature whose brain weighs a mere 1.5 kilograms. Armed with only that modest biological computer, humans dare to reconstruct 13.8 billion years of cosmic history, untangling the profound mysteries of space, time, matter, and cosmic birth.

Whether our universe is all there is, or simply one chapter in an infinite cosmic library, remains an open mystery. Perhaps one day we will unravel the secret. Or perhaps the cosmos will keep some enigmas forever to itself.

Tanvir Hossain has been writing about science since his student days, with one habit above all: explaining it in plain language. His aim is to make science part of everyday conversation in Bangladesh and to give young readers a scientific turn of mind. Two of his books, Shatabdir Biggan and Bichitro Biggan, have found a wide readership.
