Scientists Made Rice Produce Seeds Without Fertilization
What if rice could produce seeds without fertilization? Scientists have taken an important step toward making that possible by using CRISPR to switch off specific genes in rice linked to fertilization-independent seed development. The phenomenon is called apomixis, a remarkable form of seed production where embryos can develop without fertilization. The story goes back nearly 30 years, when geneticist Dr. Abed Chaudhury discovered a group of genes known as Fertilization Independent Seed (FIS) genes in Arabidopsis. Now, researchers in Australia and China have shown that switching off rice genes OsFie1 and OsFie2, which are related to those genes, can significantly increase the rate of rice seeds developing without fertilization.
